Death took well-known Dodge township farmer Ralph Chapman Sunday. "Chappy" had a severe stroke Friday evening and he died in the Greene County hospital where he was taken following the stroke which hit him at his home.
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Chapman, Guthrie county pioneers, he was 80 years old. Mr. Chapman attended Iowa State university and was graduated from the institution in 1913. While at Iowa State he competed in sports and played in the first basketball game ever played in the Iowa State Armory.
He served in World War 1 and has been active in veterans affairs. In addition, he served as Dodge township clerk for many years.
Born in Bagley, he was married to Grace Crippen who survives him.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 10:30 a m from the Marchant Funeral home in Yale. The Rev Vincent James, pastor of the Bagley Methodist Church, officiated. Vicki Stanley was pianist.
The casket was carried by Roger Zeller, Howard Fell, Bob Mingus, Tom Dahl, Ronald Smith and Jerry Clark. Interment was made in the Dodge cemetery.
Besides his widow, he is survived by nieces, nephews and a wide circle of friends.
