Funeral services for longtime Bayard resident, Mrs. Edward (Ethel May) Bower were held from the Starling Funeral Home in Bayard Wednesday at 2 p m. Previously scheduled for Tuesday, the rites were postponed one day because of the storm which struck this area Tuesday morning.
After leaving Bayard several years ago, Mrs. Bower spent her last three years in the Salem Lutheran Home in Elkhorn where she was a resident at the time of her death Sunday.
The service for Mrs. Bower was in charge of Rev. A Keith Hauser, pastor of the Bayard United Methodist Church, Miss Lula Garnes was pianist and Mrs. I R Hughes and Mrs. Ralph Starling sang two hymns.
Carrying the casket were Frank M Botts, Fred W Nance, John Hill, Eugene Phelps, Mike Phelps and Ralph Phelps. Interment was made in the Highland Cemetery.
Mrs. Ethel Love Bower passed away December 2, 1973, at the Salem Lutheran Home, Elkhorn, at the age of 81 years, six months and 29 days.
She was born May 3, 1892, at York County, Pa, to John A U and Virginia Mitchell Love. She attended school in Pa and graduated from Millersville State College in 1913.
She was united in marriage September 12, 1916, at Sioux City to Edward E. Bower and the young couple moved to a farm in Highland township near Bayard. After Mr. Bower's death in 1963 she moved to the town of Bayard, then later, in 1969 to Atlantic to be near her daughter, Jane. In 1970 she moved into the Salem Lutheran Home.
Mrs. Bower was a 55-year member of the Methodist church in Bayard, active in politics many years and was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by a sister, Bessie Meyers of Chesapeake City, Maryland; two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Honnold of Slater and Mrs. Jan Westbrook of Atlantic; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, a step-mother, three brothers and an infant daughter.
