Funeral services for Dean Herman Schoon of Bayard were held Friday, July 8, from the St Patrick's Catholic Church in Bayard, Rev Fr Richard Bergman, pastor of the church, officiated and was assisted by Rev Keith Piller, pastor of the Ascension Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids. Joseph P Ewing was organist and the St Patrick's choir sang.
Honorary casket bearers were Dennis Wurr, Roy Harris, Arlen O'Tool, Ronald Wright, Eugene Phelps, Donald Hanlon and Jerry Anderson. The casket was carried by Wayne Brown, Jim McAlister, Jim Ramaekers, Jack Tuel, Matt Murrane and Bill Caraher. Interment was made in the Highland Cemetery.
Earl Lee Phelps was scheduled to serve as a casket bearer be he was injured in an accident and Brown was originally chosen as an honorary bearer substituted.
Dean Herman Schoon was born June 11, 1934, at Palmer, son of Eleanor Toben and Herman Schoon. He moved to Bayard in 1952 and graduated from the Bayard high school in 1953. After graduation, he served in the Korean conflict.
He worked in and around Bayard, a welder and mechanic by trade.
Dean married Nancy Miller Winnett August 14, 1965. He was killed in a construction accident July 5, 1977 at Earlham.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, six children, Kathy (Mrs. Dave) Hart of Coon Rapids, Kristy, LeeAnn, Donnie Winnett, Tracy and Deana Schoon, all at home; two grandsons, Jason and Eric Hart; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schoon of Bayard and father-in-law, Lee Miller of Coon Rapids; one brother, Glenn of Cave City, Arkansas; sisters, Norma (Mrs. Wes) Brayton of Fort Dodge and Doris (Mrs. Pete) Bennett of Perry; two nieces, six nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
