Final rites for Mrs. Velma Erps were held Tuesday at 2 pm from the Slininger Chapel in Jefferson. The longtime Bagley school teacher died July 29 at Jefferson where she had been a resident of the Jefferson Manor for several years. She had been in failing health during the time she spent in Jefferson after leaving her home in Bagley.
Johnny Lee Davis, minister at the Bagley Church of Christ, officiated at the service and Mrs. Gary Maddux was organist. Interment was made in the Dodge Township Cemetery and the casket was carried by Eddie McCartney, George Brooks, Clint Morris, Lloyd Bullock, Oral Bullock and Bob Gubser.
Velma Pearl, daughter of Walter and Cora Langford Hidlebaugh, was born February 24, 1901, at Bagley where she grew to womanhood. Velma attended Iowa State University at Ames and Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls where she graduated. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Drake University in later years. Velma then taught school in Council Bluffs before her marriage to Benjamin Erps on June 16, 1925. They were the parents of three children, Keith, Patricia and Jack.
The family lived in Bagley where Mrs. Erps was a member of the Church of Christ and a member of Veritas Chapter No. 316 of OES for over 50 years. She returned to teaching in 1946 in Bagley until her retirement in 1963. Mr. Erps passed away in 1953.
Mrs. Erps died Friday, July 29, at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson at 76 years of age. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one brother, Verbal Hidlebaugh.
Survivors include her children; Keith of Tucson, Arizona; Mrs. Robert (Patricia) Porter of Bagley and Jack of Plymouth, Michigan, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren also a sister Mrs. Vera Nassar of Des Moines, other relatives and friends.
