A sudden heart attack claimed the life of Fred Esslinger at his farm home southeast of Bayard Monday morning. He had been in failing health having spent some time in hospitals but his death was totally unexpected.
The Bayard Ambulance service was called and he was taken to the Green County Hospital, he was declared dead on arrival.
A native of Highland township, he lived his entire 74 years on the farm where he was born.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1:30 pm from the Bayard United Methodist Church. The service was conducted by Rev Keith Piller of the Ascension Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids and Rev Steven Wainwright, pastor of the Bayard church.
Miss Lula Garnes was organist. Honorary pallbearers were Estle Carrick, Clyde Wine, Arthur W. Christensen, Lester Carrick, Romaine Lockwood and Ray Lewis. The casket was carried by Paul McCool, Norman Crees, Cleo Lewis, John Peckumn, Jack Turel and Orville Mozens. Interment was made in Highland Cemetery.
Frederick Mathias Esslinger was born to Jacob and Christina Schumacher Esslinger February 8, 1903, on the family farm southeast of Bayard. He joined sister, Catherine and brothers, William and John, all of whom preceded him in death.
Fred suffered a fatal heart attack in his home about 9 am Monday, October 24.
He received his education in the rural school known at Highland No. 6.
On May 14, 1938, he married Louise Schultz at the Little Brown Church in Nashua in a double wedding ceremony with brother, John and Audrey Loupee.
Fred took over the general farming operation of the home place which he has continued to the present, thus spending his 74 years in the house in which he was born. He was mechanically minded; devised several appliances for use on the farm. He enjoyed repairing machinery of his own and that of neighbors, He had a keen interest in antique machinery and enjoyed those shows.
He was baptized in the Trinity Lutheran Church, Coon Rapids, October 4, 1903, on May 2 1976, he and Louise were taken into membership of the Ascension Lutheran Church, Coon Rapids. He is survived by his wife, Louise, three nieces, two nephews and their families and numerous cousins.
