Funeral services for Iva Mays were held today at 1:30 p.m. from the Bayard United Methodist Church with the Rev A Keith Hauser officiating. Lula Garnes was organist.
Mrs. Mays died Tuesday in her sleep in the home of her son, Roger, In Des Moines, She had been living with them for about a year since her involvement with cancer became more serious. She did spend frequent weekends in her home in Bayard, however.
Iva had been employed by the Bayard News for 20 years and previous to that had been employed in the Hickey and McWilliams Clinic. In her youth she had been a school teacher.
Hers was a familiar voice to many as she called to get local news items.
Burial was in Highland cemetery and she was carried there to rest beside her husband by Merle Kent Shawd, Russ Boyles, Frank Botts, Mel Coenenm Ronald Mozena and Wilbur Robertson.
Iva Peardon Mays, daughter of Harry and Lurah Mendenhall Peardon, was born November 29, 1906, in Green County northeast of Bayard and died January 11, 1977, in Des Moines at the home of her son.
She attended Green County schools and graduated in 1924 from The Bayard High school. She attended Des Moines University and taught 16 years in Guthrie County rural schools.
She married April 6, 1941, to Ray E. Mays at the Methodist parsonage in Jefferson. They were parents of a son, Roger Ray. They lived all their married life in Bayard.
She was a member of the Bayard United Methodist church and the United Methodist Women. She worked at the Bayard News for 20 years.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Sharon; two grandsons, Raymond and Adam of Des Moines, four nieces and three nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents' husband in t957; sisters Leona Watkins in 1970 and Doris Marchant in 1976.
