RUTH NEFF

Guthrie Center

Ruth Neff (née Horsch) died on November 17, 2008 in South Bend where she lived the past four years with eldest daughter, Eva Nance. Her daytime care was by second daughter, Barbara Van Damme. Third daughter, Heide Lind, lives in Belleville IL; and Stefanie Devin is in Ankeny. Ruth leaves seven siblings and ten grandchildren.

She was pre-deceased by brother, Waldemar Horsch (WWII); and 15 months ago by Herbert, her husband of nearly 60 years. Pending plans, loved ones will gather for a springtime dual interment in Guthrie Center.

Ruth read widely in English and German. Her favorite topics were her Mennonite religion and psychology.

Typical of her generation, Ruth devoted her substantial talents to her family; and, as the big sister in a large Bavarian farming family, Ruth was always a mother. Invading armies were a bitter reality of WWII and a grave danger for a vivacious girl like Ruth. As the Soviet Empire expanded, Ruth emigrated to America in 1952 with her husband and toddler child.

Their Atlantic crossing ended in New York where a distant cousin of Herbert's took them to Iowa. Ruth maintained a bi-lingual household, including two years in Puerto Rico as a mother and missionary.

For many who knew her, Heaven was a place at Ruth's table. For Herbert, it now includes his beloved wife. ~ The Des Moines (IA) Register, Sat 10 Jan 2009.
