Ralph Bryan, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Bryan of this place, was drowned in the Black Hawk Sunday afternoon. He in company with several other boys went to the creek to bathe after a weeks work on the farm. Ralph left where he had been at work for his uncle, James Stewart, about two p.m. and being very warm went to the creek, disrobed and dived off the bank into the water which is about seven feet deep at this place. He arose once, the boys with him stated, shook his head and went down again; but as he was an expert swimmer the boys paid no more attention to him for several minutes. After they became alarmed they cried to some of the other boys on the bank that Ralph was drowning, but being all small boys they did not venture to assist and started for town, over half a mile away to give the alarm. Some young men on their way down saw the boys running and crying for help and hastened to the scene and two of them disrobed, plunged in and soon had Ralph on the bank. The news spread through the town and soon the bank of the Black Hawk was lined with people while four doctors and nearly a dozen citizens were working hard to bring Ralph back to life. They worked from 2:30 until 6:00 o'clock when the doctors decided that it was useless to work any longer and he was taken to the home of his parents who are grief stricken over the sudden loss of their son.
