Memorial
Jon Benson Burger, age 72, passed away on Good Friday April 10th, 2020 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after suffering a brain aneurysm. Jon was surrounded by his family when he passed. Due to current circumstances, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Cedar Memorial will be in charge of service arrangements.

Jon, the son of Albert and Ruby Burger, was born January 24th, 1948 in Jefferson, Iowa. He graduated from Jefferson Community High School in 1966. He went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Marketing from the University of Northern Iowa, where he was a proud member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity (Go Panthers!). On June 27th, 1970 Jon and Cynthia Anne Easton were married at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, Iowa. Together they raised a family of four children in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Jon had a very outgoing personality which suited him well with his career in corporate sales management. He will be remembered for his “gift of gab” and how he could always be counted on to make a short story long. He was a people person who enjoyed befriending individuals from all walks of life. One of Jon’s greatest joys was making people smile and laugh. In retirement, Jon and Cynthia loved traveling the world with one another. He was especially thankful for experiencing new cultures and the people he met along the way. No matter where they went, Jon connected with people.

Jon was an animal lover who had a variety of interests and hobbies. He was happiest when he was outdoors; from camping, to fishing, to planting trees and hosta, and caring for his koi pond. A fun day to him was being in a plant nursery or driving in the country with the top down on his little red convertible listening to Garth Brooks or The Grateful Dead and of course, always singing along. Jon loved going to the dog park and on long walks with Cynthia and their three pups Violet, Franky and Ivy.

Jon is survived by his wife of 50 years Cynthia Burger and his children Emily Blackhurst, Rachael Ray (Matt Cornell), Laura Burger and Adam (Dana) Burger. Jon aka Papa, is also survived by his seven beloved grandchildren Jaeden, Maclain, Olivia, Cailin, Rylan, Owen and Lennox. He was excited to welcome his eighth grandchild in October of 2020. Additionally, he is survived by his sister Kay Ann (Denny) Marten, brother A. William (Sherri) Burger, sister in-law Paula (David) Sweat and brother in-law David (Jane) Easton, as well as many nieces and nephews. Jon was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Ruby Burger, his sister Julie (Ted) Riley and his in-laws Jack and Jeannine Easton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Cedar Valley Humane Society or the Indian Creek Nature Center in Jon’s name.
