Fremont County, Iowa
Mrs. Augusta Beck

Augusta Van Fleet was born November 7, 1862, in Sullivan, Illinois, to Martin and Maria Van Fleet, one of a family of ten children. In the spring of 1865 the family moved from Illinois to Fort Dodge, Iowa, and later came to Fremont County. She knew the hardships of pioneer days, moving with wagon and ox teams. When she was three years old her father, as a doctor, served in the Civil War. She was the next to youngest of her family, and the last to be called to rest.

She graduated from Peru Nebraska, and taught at Round Top school, then at Pomeroy and Mill Creek schools, and at Dayton, Iowa, where she resigned from her teaching career to marry E.J. Beck on March 28, 1894. They were married in Riverton by Rev. James Lytle. They began housekeeping on a farm east of Riverton, later living near Hamburg and still later returning to Riverton where Mr. Beck passed away in 1937.
She was a member of the North Liberty Ladies Aid for years, until she became unable to attend because of ill health.

She died Sunday, June 21, at the home of Mrs. Fannie Stauch, in whose home she had lived for the past year and a half, at the age of 90 years, 7 months and 14 days. Mrs. Stauch had previously cared for her in her own home.

Services for "Aunt Gussie" as she was known to her many friends, were held Tuesday morning at 10:30 at the Shull Funeral Home., with Reverend Duane Manning in charge. Mrs. Robert Anderson was soloist, with Mrs. William Stubb at the piano. Former neighbors, Mrs. Floyd Ward and Ester Jones, cared for the flowers. Casket bearers were all former neighbors: Cecil Magaw, Newlon Crowell, Floyd Ward, Bryan McMullin and Edwin Anderson.

Interment was in the Mount Olive Cemetery east of Hamburg, beside her husband. Several nieces and nephews and a host of friends will mourn her passing.
Among out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral of Mrs. Beck were Mrs. Vera Powers, Mrs. Carl Powers, Mrs. Mary Dailey and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Spoons of Hamburg and Dave Jones, Mrs. Charles Seiser and Mrs. Mary Downs of Webster City, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wilson of Omaha, Perry Lester of Kansas City and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Shaeffer of Mt. Ayr.
