SMITH, AKINES, MCNEW, DRUM

William H. Smith was born at Aberton, Washington county, Virginia, March 17, 1850 and died May 24, 1929 at the Nebraska hospital, aged seventy-nine years, two months and seven days. He came to this county with his parents December 1856, when the country was very thinly settled. He knew of the hardships of a new country.

He was married to Carolina Akines in February, 1882. To this union five children were born, Albert, dying in infancy, Verna, who grew to womanhood here in this community and who died some eight years ago. Morman Smith of Kansas, Kimber Smith of Hamburg, George Smith of Nebraska City. Mrs. Smith died in September 1922. He also had one sister. Mrs. C. McNew, and one brother, John Smith, both of Riverton, a half-sister, Mrs. Drum, of Shenandoah and fifteen grandchildren.

He was a good father and a kind husband and tried to do right by all whom he knew.

Funeral services were held. Sunday, May 26, at Mount Zion an internment was made in the cemetery at that place.
