Destructive Conflagration at Sidney,
Fremont County, IowaThe Entire Business of the Business
Portion of the Town DestroyedCOUNCIL BLUFFS, Jan. 6 – The Nonpareil will, tomorrow, contain the following information concerning the business, this morning, of Sidney, the county seat of Fremont County, Iowa, yesterday. It started about one o’clock this morning in the Grosvenor lunch house, on the west side of the public square. It burned south to and including Forbush & Cantwell’s livery stable, thence northward to the street running west from the Cromwell’s House. The whole row of nine frame buildings from the livery stable to the street was burned clear. Forbush & Cantwell saved everything except five or six several hundred bushels of grain. The wind was blowing hard from the south, and in other buildings every little was saved. The flames spread rapidly. The following is a list of the losses so far as learned: Furbush & Cantwell, livery stable; Grosvenor, eating house; H. Bowen, grocery store; George Heckle, shoemaker; E. T. Simons, harness maker; the law office of A. R. Anderson; Longenfelter& A. B. Thrall, and Dr. Carpenter’s office. The loss is $20,000.
