August 6, 1954 - December 21, 2017

MASON CITY, IOWA - Peter M. Merfeld, 63, of Mason City, passed away Thursday, December 21, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, (December 27, 2017) at Epiphany Parish-St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th Street SE, Mason City, with an Epiphany clergyman officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

A visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, (December 26, 2017) at Epiphany Parish-St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th Street SE, Mason City. A Rosary will be said at 4:00 p.m., with visitation following.

In lieu of customary remembrances, memorials are suggested to Newman Catholic Schools or Epiphany Parish in Mason City, or Immaculate Conception School in Charles City.

Peter M. Merfeld was born August 6, 1954, son of Bernard and Frances (Kelly) Merfeld, in Charles City. He grew up in Marble Rock on his parent's farm, and graduated from Rockford High School. He worked at Merfeld Standard Oil Service station, FS Services for several years in petroleum sales. He continued his petroleum sales career at Colwell Coop, and Davis Oil Company in Charles City, often taking his sons with him. For the last eleven years, he was a line haul driver for Old Dominion Freight Lines from which he retired on November 24, 2017.

Pete was united in marriage to Jo Ann Scott on July 11, 1981 in Hodgenville, KY., and to this union two sons were born, Greg and Jason.

Pete in his earlier years, drag raced and liked attending drag races. He enjoyed visiting with family, friends, maintaining these friendships over the years and miles. He was always ready to help a friend or stranger; however, he never met a stranger that wasn't considered a friend. Pete was family oriented and loved spending time with his sons and grandsons, taking the family on trips with the motorcycle and sidecar to go camping. He was very active in Epiphany Parish especially in the musical ministry, being part of the choir and serving as cantor.

Pete is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Merfeld of Mason City; two sons, Greg (Lissa) Merfeld of Plymouth, and Jason (Sierra) Merfeld of Mason City; two grandsons, Parker and Bennett Merfeld; three sisters, Kathy Troy of Rochester MN., Jean Merfeld of Charles City, and Pat (Mike) Weiss of Manchester, IA.; two brothers -in- law, Kevin (Nina) Scott of Greensburg, KY., and James David (Lyda) Scott of Hodgenville, KY.; one sister-in-law, Janan VanDrew of Sterling, IL., and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Pete is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Daniel Merfeld; father and mother -in- law, David and Sue Scott.
