Robert Stephen ("Steve") Thomson, of Coto de Caza, California, passed away Monday, November 20, 2017, following a heart attack the preceding Thursday evening.

A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Charles City, Iowa. Visitation will be a Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 12, 2017, and one hour prior to the Mass on the following day. The Holy Rosary will be prayed at the end of visitation on Tuesday. Burial at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City will follow the Mass, and coffee will be served at the Parish Hall of Immaculate Conception Church following burial.

Steve Thomson was born in Charles City, Iowa, on May 10, 1955, the first child of Robert Lee ("Bob") and Janan McQuillen Thomson. After attending grade school at the Immaculate Conception Academy in Charles City, Steve graduated from Charles City High School in 1973, where he played football and other sports. He received a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Business Administration from the University of Iowa in 1977.

Steve married Christine Hollister at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in 1978.

After working for the Parks and Recreation Departments of Hartford, Connecticut, and Eugene, Oregon, Steve started "Avenida Travel," a travel agency in Mission Viejo, California in 1984. The single agency eventually grew into a network of 13 travel agencies in eight states in 1999, when it was sold by Steve to outside investors.

In 2000, Steve founded Sunbelt Business Brokers of the Orange Coast, which he owned and operated until his death.

During his career, Steve received the Outstanding Young Professional Award for 1984 from the National Recreation and Park Association and the Top Travel Agency Award from International Tours in 1998. He was a member of the national Million Dollar Roundtable for Sunbelt brokers between 2001 and 2009, and was president of Sunbelt's corporate holding company during a portion of this time.

Steve was a voracious reader on topics ranging from archaeology to counter-party risk in synthetic collateralized debt obligations. Steve was a fan of railway and steamship travel, and an inveterate fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins. Steve was also devoted to the YMCA movement and the Charles City Family YMCA in particular, which he often credited as being a major positive influence on his life. Steve maintained a strict exercise regime throughout his life.

Steve is survived by his wife Christine (of Coto de Caza), his son Robert Francis Thomson (of Coto de Caza), his daughter Elizabeth Dale (Josh) Fioretto (of Ames, Iowa), brothers Peter Walsh Thomson and Charles McQuillen Thomson (of Denton, Texas and Charles City, Iowa, respectively), his sister Mary Palma ("Molly") Thomson (of Charles City), his nephew Peter McQuillen ("Mac") Thomson (of Denton, Texas), and by his father, who resides in Charles City. Steve was predeceased by his mother.

Memorial contributions can be made in Steve's memory to the Charles City Family Y Foundation, 801 Hulin Street, Charles City, Iowa 50616.
