Jessie 'Joan' Hughes

June 2, 1930 - October 29, 2017

Jessie “Joan” Hughes of Nora Springs, Iowa, passed away Sunday, October 29 at the age of 87.

A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 4th, 2017 at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N Hawkeye Ave, Nora Springs, Iowa. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral chapel.

Joan was living at the Nora Springs Care Center.

She was born on June 2, 1930 in Mason City, Iowa. Her parents were Hugh and Jessie (Krause) Hughes. She grew up in the rural area around Mason City and Nora Springs. Joan graduated from Mason City High School in 1948. She attended Westmar College in LeMars and graduated from the Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester in 1952.

In 1953, Joan moved to California with five friends from her graduating class. Her first job was with the Stanford University Hospital in San Francisco. Joan worked as a nurse in the Bay area for 40 years. She moved back to Nora Springs when she retired in 1992. Joan regularly attended Faith Baptist Church in Mason City and moved from Nora Springs to The Manor in Mason City in 2013.

Besides Joan's parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Helen, her brother Frank, a sister-in-law Patricia Hughes, and a niece Kathy Hughes Custer. Joan is survived by her niece Helen (Bob) Lamote, nephew Tom (Rosemary) Hughes, a sister-in-law Cheryll Hughes, two grandnephews, three grandnieces, and one great-grandnephew.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Good Shepherd Health Center and Nora Springs Care Center for their compassionate care.

Memorials may be directed to the Faith Baptist Church in Mason City, Iowa.
