Possibly a Suicide.
West Union Gazette:—E. L. Wallace, formerly of the Fayette County National Bank of this city, and later bookkeeper in Bopp Bros.’ bank at Hawkeye, died at his home on the McGlathery farm, two miles south-west of town, at 3 o'clock Wednesday morning. Monday night he was at Hawkeye, returning after midnight with a livery and driver. Tuesday morning he was discovered in the barn in an unconscious state, the presence of an empty phial indicating an overdose of morphine, but whether taken with suicidal intent can never be known. Dr. Darnall was summoned and labored with him all day Tuesday, unable to restore his patient to consciousness, the deadly drug having done its direful work.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born in 1859 and is buried in the West Union Cemetery.
