Sylvan James Taylor, 86, of Clermont, Iowa died Friday, October 23, 2020 at Good Samaritan Society in West Union, Iowa. Sylvan James was born March 15, 1934 to James and Selma (Olson) Taylor in Pleasant Valley Township, Fayette County, Iowa. He was baptized April 22, 1934 and confirmed June 1, 1945, both at East Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont, Iowa. Sylvan graduated from Clermont High School in 1953.
On July 12, 1959, Sylvan was united in marriage with Arlene Schutte at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa. Two children were born to this union. Throughout the years, Sylvan owned and operated several Gas and Service Stations in Clermont. He also owned Taylor Auto Sales, where he sold snowmobiles, motorcycles, mopeds, snapper mowers, Massey-Ferguson, Kawasaki and Rupp. Sylvan was a member of the Northeast Iowa Classic Tractors, the Hiawatha Hilltoppers Snowmobile Club, was a Mason/Shriner and a lifelong member of the East Clermont Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends, fishing in Canada with his buddies, playing cards with the guys, collecting tractors and was Director of “Sylvan Learning Center” in Clermont, Iowa. Sylvan was a great historian about Clermont and was a story teller.
Surviving Sylvan are his wife, Arlene Taylor of Clermont, Iowa; his children, Rick (Dina) Taylor of Clermont, Iowa and Lori (Jeff) Lehmann of Wadena, Iowa; six grandchildren, Shaun (Morgan) Lehman, Sheena (Ricky) Kremer, Shantel (Mark) Lensing, Shelby Lehmann, Erika Heller and Jaylee Heller; great-grandchildren, Audie and Bruin Lehmann, Rose Lensing and Olivia Meike; sister, Bonnie (Don) Haack of Davenport, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Evelyn Tague of Clermont, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Selma Taylor; sister, Lavon Taylor; and one brother-in-law, Orlan “Swede” Tague.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm on Friday, October 30, 2020 at Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Clermont, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before services at the church on Saturday.
Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at East Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont, Iowa with Rev. Ron Roberts as the officiant.
Burial will follow at East Clermont Lutheran Cemetery, Clermont, Iowa.
There will also be a reunion of friends at Taylor Auto Sales following the burial and meal.
Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Clermont, Iowa is assisting the family with arrangements.
