DEATH OF CHARLES COLBURN

Charles Colburn, a well known and popular business man of West Union, died at 2 o'clock Saturday morning, Dec. 30. The following obituary notice has been furnished. In moments of deepest emotion we are instinctively silent. We stand in hushed admiration before the wonders of a Yosemite, a Milan cathedral, or a great masterpiece. We listen to a Beethoven symphony, see a glorious sunset touch, look through a telescope at Saturn swinging on his distant way, or through a microscope at the wondrous world in a drop of water, and all the babel of earth's voices dies in hushed stillness while we pay the tribute of our highest eloquence -- the eloquence of silence. What shall we say then, when we come as we do here in this brief space to pay our parting tribute of love and respect to the memory of one who was born in our city and who has likewise spent the whole of his life in our midst? If someone had told us three months ago that so many months hence this community would be called upon to lay away, this man in his grave upon the hilltop we would hardly have believed it.

Charles Colburn, son of Albert Colburn, Sr., was born in West Union Sept. 9, 1865, and in this community. he grew up, receiving his education, and entering into the spirit of the community, and throughout his entire life was always a most conspicuous character in our midst. March 21, 1889, at Postville, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Miss Dora Shiek. Returning to West Union after the wedding they laid the foundations of a home and have resided here continuously ever since. Two sons, Albert and Eugene, together with the wife and' mother, are left to mourn his untimely departure. Mr. Colburn was always a genial fellow to meet, always had a vast circle of friendships, was a very devoted husband and father, a most excellent and obliging neighbor and friend. He will be greatly missed in the home life, to which he was warmly attached, and likewise all his neighbors and friends will oft times long for the touch of a vanished hand, and the sound of a voice that is still. His last sickness was of short duration, lasting in all about ten weeks, when death intervened on Saturday morning.

Funeral services were held from Holy Name Church Tuesday forenoon, Rev. H.F. Roney having charge of the services. Interment was made in the city cemetery. Let us gather comfort in the case of this unexpected event that in this great temporal theater of events each scene is shifted by a guiding hand; that never a curtain falls save in response to the bell. The sincere sympathy of a host of friends goes out to the bereaved family in their affliction.
