Bernard Herbert “Herby” Nielsen, the son of Danish immigrant Niels K and Krestine (Flint) Nielsen was born on June 25, 1930 on the farm one mile south of where he currently lived near Wallingford, Iowa. He passed away on August 23, 2021 at Accura Health Care Center in Spirit Lake, Iowa at the age of 91 years.

Herby attended three different one room schoolhouses in 12-Mile Lake Township, as his parents moved from different insurance owned farms after the depression. He attended Estherville High School and graduated in 1948. It was while he was riding the school bus in high school that he met his future bride, Effie June Jensen. Love at first sight, so to speak. After high school he helped his parents farm due to his father’s poor health. Herby was called to service on March 9, 1953, for the Korean Conflict, the forgotten war. He did basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

On July 14, 1953, he was united in marriage to Effie June Jensen in Estherville, Iowa. Herby returned to the service where he spent several weeks of training as a survey specialist stateside, then he was stationed in Korea. During his time in the service, he was in Korea, Japan and Hawaii. He obtained the rank of Sargent and received an honorable discharge on March 9, 1955. After his discharge and returning home, he and his wife Effie and daughter Coleen moved south of Ringsted and worked for State Representative Niels J. Nielsen. In the fall of 1955, they moved back to their present home west of Wallingford. Herby started farming in 1956, where he had a crop and livestock operation. He received the Iowa Master Swine Producer Award in 1958. Herby served on different boards such as DEK, Telephone Board, and held several different council positions while a member of Wallingford Lutheran Church.

Herby loved restoring antique John Deere tractors which led to the opening of Nielsen Spoke Wheel in 1996. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting in his earlier years, telling jokes and telling stories, spending time with family and friends and watching his son, Roger, race at Jackson, Minnesota and Fairmont, Minnesota, videoing every race. Herby and Effie enjoyed square dancing with the Estherville Bustle Rustlers at many different area towns.

He was a member of United Methodist Church in Estherville. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, receiving his quilt of valor in 2019.

Left to cherish Herby’s memory are his wife Effie, his children Coleen (Dean) Lundgren of Estherville, Kathleen Tirevold of Estherville, and Roger (Karmen) Nielsen of Fairmont; grandchildren Jeff (Michelle) Lundgren, Mike Lundgren, Steve Lundgren, Kelly (Brett) Strenge, Brad (Alysha) Tirevold, and Randy Nielsen; great-grandchildren Madison, Brenden, Keegen, Dillon, Danica, Delaney, Braeden, Julia, Stella, brother-in-law Nordein Peterson, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Nicholas Tirevold, mother-in-law Flossie Jensen, sisters Rose Nielsen, Linda Peterson, brother Thor Nielsen, brother-in-law Melvin Nielsen, and sister-in-law Helen Nielsen.

A funeral service was held Monday, August 30, 2021 at the United Methodist Church in Estherville with interment at Oak Hill Cemetery in Estherville.
