Lee J. Anderson may have been his name given at birth but to most he was known as “Hoss” – a nickname that that suited him well. Hoss was born to Dale and Janice Anderson on July 27, 1962 in Ringsted, Iowa and passed away on August 5, 2021 in Estherville, Iowa after a long and brave battle with a chronic illness.

Hoss was the third born (and self-proclaimed favorite) of eight children. He was born, raised and lived his entire life in the Armstrong-Ringsted area. Hoss had a work ethic: work smarter, not harder – and he did just that. He had various jobs over the years driving truck, working for the county driving a snowplow and doing road maintenance; but his favorite job of all was being a dad to his son Rylee.

In his free time Hoss loved to take things apart and sometimes put them back together. He loved tractors, riding his motorcycle, wheeling and dealing (always coming out on top), and spending time with his friends and family. He took pride in cooking for others, no one left his house hungry especially if he was making his chicken gizzards or pork chops. Hoss had a wonderful sense of humor and an enormous heart. He was an icon with his epic beard and love of bib overalls. Hoss used to say “If you aren’t living on the edge, you’re taking up too much space.”

You might not have been able to see it from the outside but on the inside Hoss was a man of faith who believed in treating others right no matter the circumstance. No matter where he went, he left with friends. He was a true diamond in the rough.

Of all the things anyone could say about Hoss, most would tell you he was larger than life, a true gentleman, fiercely loyal, and a wonderful loving and kind father, son, partner,
and friend. Loved by many people far and wide, Hoss never met a stranger. He will be greatly missed. Ride in Peace, Hoss!

Left to cherish him are his parents Dale and Janice Anderson of Estherville, his son Rylee West Anderson and granddaughter Marlowe both of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and his partner of 18 years Denise and her children of Estherville. He is also survived by his siblings Paul (Shannon) Anderson of Wahpeton, Iowa; Mark (Amy) Anderson of Estherville; Kay (Alan) Burgeson of Spirit Lake, Iowa; Ann Daily of Polk City, Iowa; Gail Anderson of Lawrenceville, Georgia; John (Jackie) Anderson and Adam (Mel) Anderson all of Armstrong, Iowa; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Hoss is preceded in death by his sister Lynn Michelle Anderson and his grandparents: Ray and Laura Anderson and LaRue and Kathryn Wiseman.

The funeral service was held Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Graettinger, Iowa.
