Obituary for "Cy"

Cyril I. "Cy" Potts, 77, of Dubuque, died Monday, June 11, 2012 at the Regional Medical Center, Manchester. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2012 at the Church of The Resurrection with the Rev. Joseph Hauer officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with full military rites accorded by the American Legion Post #6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 2:00 - 8:00 Thursday, June 14, 2012 at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Cremation Services where a parish scripture wake service will be recited at 7:30 p.m.

Cy was born on December 13, 1934 in Graf, Iowa, the son of Irvin and Anna (Kiernan) Potts. He attended Loras Academy where he was Lt. Col. in the ROTC program and graduated from Loras College. Cy served in the U.S. Army and was employed at John Deere Dubuque Works for 27 years. On June 15, 1957, he married Virginia Grue at St. Raphaels Cathedral. He was a member of Resurrection Parish, the Asbury Eagle's Club and the Loras College Athletic Hall of Fame. Cy loved to play golf, work in his yard and have morning coffee with his mall buddies.

Cy's grandchildren were a special part of his life.

Surviving is his wife Virginia of Dubuque; his children Steve (Dawn) Potts of Dubuque, Tom (Beth) Potts of Waukee, IA., Sue (Jim) Hannon of St. Paul, MN., Sara (Mark) Sauter of Edina, MN; his grandchildren, Tommy, Kevin and Michael Hannon, Nicole, Tyler, Brandon and Morgan Potts, Ella and Joe Sauter, Kristin (Dave) Keil and Beth Hannon; his brothers Jerry (Kay) Potts of Dubuque, IA. and Gene Tiny (Jean) Potts of Asbury, IA.; a sister, Dorothy McDermott of Cascade, IA. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother-in-law Mary Lavon (Mark) Brown; brother and sister-in-law Warren "Bud" (Shirley) Potts; brother-in-law Emmett McDermott, sister-in-law Janann (Leo) King.

A Cyril "Cy" Potts memorial fund has been established.

The Potts family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Regional Medical Center, Manchester, IA. and their EMT services and a special thanks to Cy's neighbors who meant so much to him.
