Maryann Rolling, 84, wife of the late John Rolling, and the daughter of Albert Giegerich (II) and Berdetta Luttenberg passed away February 6, 2016.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 12 at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, where a visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Road is assisting the family.

Maryann was born on January 27, 1932. She graduated from the Visitation Academy in 1950, the University of Dubuque with an undergraduate degree in Sociology and a Masters in Social Work from the University of Iowa in 1985.

She held a variety of jobs and many volunteering stints through-out her life. Shortly after high school graduation she held a position with the F.B.I. in Washington D.C. She was employed by Nutri-systems as a counselor. She worked for The Department of Human Services as a Social Worker. The greatest job she had was being a wonderful wife and the understanding mother to her children.

Maryann's volunteering included such organizations as; the Red Cross as a Water Safety Instructor, Girl Scouts as a leader, Democratic Party and Editor of a Mother's Club newsletter. Maryann was a huge proponent of social justice issues volunteering with causes such as Ceasar Chavez's grape boycott to ensure humane working conditions of the migrant workers. She was a large part of the start of the racial integration of Dubuque working with the Dubuque Area Citizen's Council on Community Relations she opened her home to promote an understanding and love of diversity. She treasured her personal letter praising her efforts on racial equality from Mrs. Martin Luther King Jr.

Maryann developed a deep love of music and singing being a member of the Dubuque Chorale and church choir. She was also a member of the Mississippi Trails Hiking Club, & Friendship Force. She was a life- long learner as well as helping others to learn by offering to teach courses offered through the Roberta Kuhn Center. In her later years she became a very active re-learner.

Surviving are her children, Judy Simmons of Waterloo, Ted & significant other Mardi Miller of Omaha, Ne., Jim (Karen), Ann Bauer (and friend Pat Kozen) both of Dubuque, & Joe (Zahir) of Cleveland Ohio. She is leaving this world with; 12 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 4 great great-grandchildren; siblings: Albert(IV), Gloria Ward of Dubuque, John of Monticello, and Roger(Sandy) of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her husband; John J. Rolling; parents; Albert and Birdetta Giegerich; great grandson; Matthew Smith; Sister, Patti Giegerich; sisters-in-law; Marie Giegerich and Jeanne Giegerich.

In lieu of flowers Memorials may be given to Dubuque Humane Society, The Maria House, St. Teresa shelter, and the Rescue Mission.

Maryann and her family thank the oncology department and staff at Dubuque Medical Associates for their kindness, sensitivity and cheerfulness.
The family would like to thank Assissi Village and Stonehill for all their help and compassion.
