FUNERAL OF MR. LORIMIER
~
Tribute of Respect to His
Memory
~
Dubuque saw a gain-day on Thursday, when the procession of the Iowa Grand Lodge of the I.O.O.F., with banners and music, paraded the streets, and then made a happy evening by a social banquet. But yesterday was the sorrowing day of the funeral of one of the earliest permanent settlers of the lead region.

We published on Tuesday last a biographical sketch of the late venerable P. A. Lorimier, and now record the fact that the large funeral, yesterday, in honor of his memory, was a proof of the high estimation in which he held by this community.

The Early Settlers Association to the number of fifty members met, at their rooms, at 1 o’clock, Gen. Jones in his chair.

Among the early settlers at the meeting, or in the procession, were, Dr. Mason, R. Bonson, R. Plumbe, E. Flynn, Alex Young, H. C. Pierce, S. M. Langworthy, D. W. Cleveland, R. Waller, C. H. Booth, J. D. Langworthy, S.K. Scott, J. McBride, Thomas Hardie, Richard Cox, W. W. Smith, J. Zughenbuhler, Jacob Brown, Samuel Scott, M. H. Waples, R. S. Harris, Wm. D. Buckham, F. Wiegle, John W. Finley, J. M. Harrison, J. H. Thedinga, I. E. Wootton, Wm. Grammer, W. S. Gilliam, John Maclay, E. Langworthy, R. Noite, Wm. Myers, John Palmer, F. Mattox, A. R. Harrison, A. Cain, Warner Lewis, A. Levi, Wm. Radford, Alex Anderson, Geo. M. Jones, Geo. Beaubien, Thomas Levens, Henry Riker and J. T. Nowlin.

A few early settlers from Galena were present and, among them were J. G. Soulard, F. H. Beebe and John Lorraine.

The chairman stated the object of the meeting, and made some very appropriate remarks on the life and character of the deceased, describing his peculiarities, commending his business capacity, his integrity and blameless life. He narrated several illustrations of Mr. Lorimier’s uprightness and consistency in middle life, forty years ago. He said he had known him well since the year 1820, and believed that, at heart, her had always endeavored to be right.

A committee on resolutions, consisting of Messrs. J. E. Wootton, Wm. Vandever, E. Langworthy, A. Levi, and J. H. Thedinga reported the following.

WHEREAS, in the dispensation of providence, this association has lost a beloved member by the death of Peter A. Lorimier; and,

WHEREAS, we wish to express of due respect to the memory of such an early pioneer who left his business to serve the government of his choice, and helped to defend the United States in the war of 1812 and subsequently became a leading business man in the development of the lead region of three continuous states, who filled various official positions of trust and honor with credit to himself and to the benefit and satisfaction of the people therefore.

The members the proceeded to the family residence wearing the usual badge of mourning.
