Bellevue, Iowa – Gary John Weis, 71, Bellevue, Iowa died Sunday evening, July 8th, 2018 at Mill Valley Care Center.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 14th at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road with Deacon Loras Weber officiating. Family and friends may visit after 10:00 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Bellevue, Iowa.

Gary was born on December 22, 1946 in Dubuque, Iowa the son of Elmer J. and Marian (Rolling) Weis. Gary graduated from Marquette High School in 1965 and attended classes at Clinton Community College, with a very special interest in history.

He was an extremely dedicated and loyal employee and worked for many years as a HVAC technician, leaving no important detail undone or unexplained. He was a proud member of Ducks Unlimited and The National Rifle Association - his love of hunting, fishing and nature went hand-in-hand and his family will be forever grateful for the many hours of patient shooting practice and hunting instruction he gave to them. He devoured books. He was a natural teacher and he was a wealth of information: guns, ammunition, animals, electrical fittings, sports scores and play-by-plays (particularly regarding the Hawkeyes or the Cubs) – Gary had an enviable memory and he was precise. His knowledge of the American History and in particularly, the Civil War, was awe-inspiring and all-encompassing - only surpassed by his completely generous and kind heart. He was a loving son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend – giving selflessly of his time and talents and asking for little in return.

Gary attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Bellevue.

Surviving are his siblings Mark (Mack) Weis, of Durango, Iowa, Susan Corlis, of Wake Forest, North Carolina, Sandy (Doug) Schroeder, of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents Elmer & Marian Weis, his brother Bill Weis and sister Julie Knake.

Special thanks to the staff members at Dubuque Nursing and Rehab Center, Mill Valley Care Center, and Hospice of Jackson County. Your care of Gary was appreciated and will not be forgotten.
