Catherine Mary Heinz, 96, of Dubuque, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2016, at Ennoble Manor Care Center.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2016, at the Church of the Nativity. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Centralia, IA. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 24th, at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1640 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 7:00 p.m.

Catherine was born January 12, 1920, in Dubuque, daughter of John A. and Lidwina (Schmitt) Heinz. The family farmed in Peosta, Iowa. Catherine was assistant to her father, who was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives in 1950. She graduated from Clarke College in 1963.

Family was important to Kate. She was an enthusiastic and accomplished amateur genealogist, who spent countless hours tracing the ancestry of her family. She spent the last week of her life actively attending gatherings with 30 nieces, nephews, spouses and great and great-great nieces and nephews at a family reunion.

Catherine taught kindergarten in the Dubuque Community School System before retiring.

Kate was a lady of remarkable will and accomplishment and will be deeply missed by her family and many friends.

She was a member of Nativity parish, their Rosary Society, the A.C.C.W., the Dubuque Retired Teachers Association, a 30-year member of the Iowa Federation of Women's Club, the Dominican Laity since 1959, who loved traveling, map reading and taking routes that were off the beaten path.

Surviving are a sister, Sophia Blong, of Des Moines, Iowa; 14 nieces and nephews, Jane Capin, Joan (Dan) Meyer, Sara (Larry) Morris, Mary Sue (Gary) Babb, Carolyn (Denis) Schmitt, Pat (Phil) Blahut, Paul (Paula) Herrig, George (Susan) Herrig, Phyllis (Cary) Matthews, Carol (Dan) Waddick, Mary Herrig, Ann (David) Greiling, Tom (Dolly), Herrig, and Michele (Tom) Raynak; great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Joseph Heinz, Edward Heinz and John Heinz Jr.; two sisters, Lucille Heinz and Mary Herrig; two brothers-in-law, Lee Herrig and Matthew Blong; and a nephew, John Lee Herrig.
