Ronald J. Fens, 65, of South Elgin, Ill., formerly of Dubuque, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin, with his family by his side.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, at Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a parish wake service at 5 p.m.

He was born on May 24, 1943, in Dubuque, son of Joe and Adele Fens. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1961.

He was a hard-working, dedicated and well-respected businessman in Dubuque and South Elgin as owner of Du-B-Q Meats, Inc., where he retired in 2002.

During his retirement, Ron loved to spend as much time as possible on the golf course, whether it was just playing or working as a ranger. His other hobbies and interests included traveling and gambling with his wife, Cathy, fishing, taking golf trips and attending or watching NASCAR races. Above all, his greatest love and passion was spending quality time with his family and friends.

Surviving are his wife, Cathy (Besler); six sons, Ron (Jennifer) Fens Jr., Randy (Ginny) Fens, Wayne (Michele) Schueler, Matt (Becky) Schueler, Ryan (Nicole) Fens and Darren Fens; 13 grandchildren, Paige, Courtney, Niko, Taylor, Carter, Jared, Reese, Jonathan, Madison, Cameron, McKenzie, Alexis and Brody; a brother, Richard Fens; and a sister, Rita Fens Grobstick; brothers-in-law, Bob (Niece) Besler and Gerald (Ann) Besler; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law, Lorraine Besler; a brother-in-law, Leroy Besler; and his beloved dog, Maggie.
