Death of Mrs. Mary E. Cobb

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Cobb, the wife of Col. John Cobb, was born in Trenton, New Jersey, Feb. 26, 1818. She departed this life in Farmington, April 16, 1876.

She was united in marriage to Col. Cobb, October 6, 1861. The union proved a happy one. Their relation in life was all that could be desired. The smiles of Heaven never rested on a happier home. None who ever knew Mrs. Cobb –though the subject, at times, of severe bodily affliction-can ever forget her good humor, her cheerful disposition, and her kindness to all, both rich and poor. She was devoted to her husband, and she never seemed to think her lot a hard one if she could only comfort him, by some kind attention. She toiled with willing hands, often both day and night for her children and grandchildren. She was always among the first to lend assistance in carrying forward the enterprises of the church of her choice. Her excellences were more manifest to those who knew her most intimately. Early in life she became a woman of prayer. She was religiously trained by her mother, Mrs. Geo. Briggs, of Iowa, who was a Christian of rare excellence, and whose example the daughter ever considered worthy of imitation. To the exalted Christian life and teachings of the mother may be attributed many of Mrs. Cobb’s virtues. For many years, with her husband, she was a consistent member of the M. E. Church. Her life “in the flesh, was lived by the faith of the Son of God,” in whom she died, and who at last received her to Himself.

Her funeral sermon was preached by her pastor, Rev. J. Wesley Johnson, in the M. E. Church, in the presence of a large concourse of people, from Psalms, 23:4. Her remains were laid in the family lot in the Masonic Cemetery.

She leaves a large circle of friends, whose sorrow, but not without hope. Thank God for hope of immortality.-Farmington, Mo. Times.

Mrs. Cobb, the lady referred above, was known and much respected by a host of friends in Dubuque. She resided in Potosi, Wis., for a number of years, and by none will her loss be more keenly felt than by her acquaintances in this city. As the article truly says, she leaves a large circle of friends to mourn her loss.
