Julia "Judy" A. Kraus, 73, of Dubuque and Carlsbad, CA, died suddenly Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center.

Memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 2008 at Resurrection Catholic Church, where friends may greet the family from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Rev. Joseph Hauer will officiate. Inurnment will be in California [Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery, Oceanside, California] at a later date. Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 26 at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a wake service at 7:00 p.m.

Judy was born August 30, 1935 in Waterloo, the daughter of Edward and Mercedes (Murphy) Connell. She married Kenneth Kraus on September 8, 1956, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo, IA.

Judy graduated from Loras College and spent 25 years employed by the Dubuque Community Schools. She began her career as an aide in the special education department, which led her to pursue her life-long passion and become a special education teacher. Judy was devoted to the children she taught.

Her husband, children, and grandchildren came first in her heart, and she adored spending time with them. As a final act of kindness and generosity, Judy gave the gift of life through organ and tissue donation.

Surviving are her husband Kenny of Dubuque; four children, Kevin (Barbara) Kraus of Decorah, Kathy (Larry) Lievens of Hillsdale, IL, Ellen (Brian) Patch of Dubuque, and Ed (Judy) Kraus of Marion; nine grandchildren, Jeff, Scott, Megan, John, Allison, Peter, Felicia, Tessa, and Andrew; and one sister, Mary Jo (Richard) Corkery of Springfield, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Special Olympics, the Dubuque Rescue Mission, or to Resurrection Catholic Church. Judy's family extends a special thank you to the Finley Emergency Room staff as well as the doctors and nurses at both Finley and Mercy ICUs for their care and compassion.
