Lois M. Haxmeier, 88, of 2677 Rockdale Road, passed away at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, at St. Joseph's Church, Key West, Iowa, with the Rev. Donald Bakewell officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m. Friends may also call after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church until time of services.

Lois was born on April 13, 1923, in La Motte, daughter of John and Wilhelmina (Koppes) Streff. She graduated from Holy Rosary School, and later attended Beauty School.

She married Orville Haxmeier on Feb. 12, 1946, at Holy Rosary Church and together they owned and operated the Haxmeier Tap in La Motte. She then owned and operated a beauty shop in La Motte and lastly worked at Table Mound Park as a secretary until her retirement. Orville preceded her in death on Dec. 16, 1971.

Lois loved to entertain and have company at her home. She loved to bake cookies, play cards, do crossword puzzles and play solitaire.

Surviving are her children, Nancy (Michael) Vorwald, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Ann (David) Steckel, of Sherrill, Iowa, John Haxmeier and Glen Haxmeier, both of Dubuque; seven grandchildren, Jeff Steckel, Sara Dimmer, Melissa Kambouris and Jason, Tim, Andrew and Eric Vorwald; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Eldon (Helen) Streff, of Salem, Ohio; brothers-in-law, Jim (LaVon) Haxmeier and LaVerne (Mary Ann) Haxmeier, both of La Motte; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Haxmeier, of La Motte; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents and a son in infancy, Norman.
