DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Ann Marie Schmitt, 83, of Dyersville, died Monday, March 24, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Dyersville.

Friends and relatives of Ann may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 28, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Dyersville, where a wake service will be held at 3 p.m. Friends also may call from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 29, at the funeral home. Services for Ann will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville, with the Rev. Noah Diehm officiating. Burial will be held in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Farley.

Ann Marie Schmitt was born March 20, 1931, in Farley, daughter of George and Verna Lee (Atkinson) Sullivan. After attending St. Joseph's School, she went to Bayless Business College in Dubuque.

Ann worked as a private secretary to Fred Loetscher, of Farley, and Loetscher Manufacturing. Ann had enjoyed her volunteer work at the Dyer House giving tours, and she was a member of the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary.

She married her sweetheart, James "Jim" Schmitt, on Sept. 5, 1952, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Farley, and they shared 62 loving years together.

Family was most important to Ann; she cherished all her grandchildren and especially loved to hear stories about the little ones. She maintained contact with many distant relatives as well. She was a great cook and always had a full cookie jar. Ann loved music and dancing and she was an avid reader, reading newspapers and books. She took great enjoyment in discussing politics and working at the voting polls. Ann was a valued resource to many people for her vast knowledge of families and history of Farley and surrounding areas. She enjoyed travel and the many years that she and Jim wintered in the South. Ann was proud of her Irish heritage and was known to visit with everyone, strangers or friends. All ages, young and old, spent time with her and appreciated her quick Irish wit. Left behind are many friends and relatives who will fondly remember Ann.

Those who will miss her most dearly are her husband, James; four children, Susan (Stephen) Lambert, of Marion, Jay (Linda) Schmitt, of Manchester, Linda (Dennis) Moen, of Platteville, Wis., and Dave (Barbara) Schmitt, of Dyersville; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John O'Connor; two sisters, Elizabeth Healy and Katherine Gill; and two brothers-in-law, Emmet Healy and John Gill.
