FARLEY, Iowa - Sue Ann Fern, 58, of Maplewood, Minn., formerly of Farley, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006, at home, following a long, courageous battle with multiple myeloma. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, with the Rev. Beverly Short officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Farley. Friends may call after 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. She was born on Jan. 4, 1948, in Dubuque, daughter of Earl and Elizabeth ( Fox) Fern. She was a 1966 graduate of the former St. Joseph's High School in Farley. She also was a 1968 graduate of the Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque, where she received her certification as an X-ray technician. She was employed at the former Dubuque Packing Co. for 10 years. In 1985, she moved to the Twin Cities, where she was employed at Roots and Fruits food coop and served as president of the board. Sue was a wonderful woman who touched many lives and was deeply loved by her family and friends. She was active in many sports, including bowling and softball and was WRA president. Her joy of singing led her to be one of the founders of the Twin Cities Women's Choir. Surviving are two children, Amy Catherine Bastian and Brad Albert Bastian, both of St. Paul, Minn.; five grandchildren, Kanisha, Nakara, Mariah, Emon and Elijha; three brothers, Douglas (Janet) Fern, of Dubuque, Mark "Fuzzy" (Pam) Fern, of Farley, and Jess Fern, of Streator, Ill.; a sister, Peri O'Connell Krepfle, of Farley; two sisters-in-law, Jayne Fern and Lisa Fern, both of Dubuque; and a brother-in-law, Jack O'Connell, of Bankston. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Tom Fern, in 1992; a sister, Erin Fern, in 1943; and a nephew, John Fern, in 2006. A Sue Ann Fern Memorial Fund has been established.
