Bridging the Mississippi

Mr. R. P. Morgan. Esqr., a Practical Engineer was at this place a few days since, for the purpose of examining the river bluffs, with the view to determine the practicability of constructing a railroad bridge at this point.

We understand that Mr. Morgan was here at the instance of certain New York capitalist, who have already invested money in Western roads, and who wish to have more definite information concerning the country, and the practicability of pushing across the River to the fertile plains beyond.

Mr. Morgan speaks unhesitatingly in favor of this point for a crossing, and says it’s the only practicable one north of Rock Island.

He proposed crossing at a point exactly opposite the Illinois and Wisconsin line, about 40 rods above the telegraph pole on the opposite side. Between 17 and 18 hundred feet from this point will reach the island; the bridge to be on piers; - the abutment 70 feet above high water mark, and sloping at a grade of 30 feet per mile. From the east abutment he gains the height of land by skirting along the bluff some three miles to Sinnape branch, and following that stream four miles. By a similar course he would reach Fevre River in direction of Galena.

Mr. M. has the utmost confidence in the feasibility of constructing this bride so as to accommodate both the Chicago & Galena and also the Milwaukee and Mississippi roads.
