Fred Roling Claimed by Death Wednesday
Rites for Prominent Remsen Man Set for Friday

Death Tuesday afternoon claimed Fred Roling, 84, prominent and widely known retired farmer and business man in this area, who passed away in his home after more than a year of failing health and a month of severe sickness. Failing health prompted his retirement from business activity more than a year ago and for many months he has confined himself strictly to his home. He suffered several light strokes during the year and when another attack came a month ago the end was foreseen. Mr. Roling passed away at 12:40 o'clock Tuesday.

Born on a farm near New Vienna, Iowa, September 29, 1867, he was the son of John and Theresa Roling. In Petersburg, Iowa, October 6, 1896, he married Mary Reisberg and four years later in 1900 the couple came to Remsen.

They settled on a rented farm three miles southwest of town and lived there eight years. In 1908 they bought the old Gebhardt farm one mile south of town and operated there successfully until their retirement to town in 1942.

Mr. Roling always took a deep interest in public affairs and while a farmer served as township trustee for many years, also helped organize the Farmers Co-operative Co. here and served this institution as a director from the time of its organization until his failing health necessitated his retirement. Members at the time, in recognition of his long and faithful service, unanimously voted him an honary director. Mr. Roling also was an organizer and served for many years in an official capacity with the Remsen Mutual Insurance Co.

No man in the community perhaps more firmly held the esteem of his acquaintances as did Fred Roling. Head of a large and estimable family he was a devoted husband and father, and to his friends was ever loyal and helpful when occasions presented themselves. As a public official and business man Mr. Roling's counsel was sought and his associates respected his opinions and held him in high regard for his sense of justice and honesty.

The body is at the Fisch funeral home. Services will be in St. Mary's Catholic Church Friday morning at 9:30 o'clock, and burial in St. Mary's cemetery.

Pallbearers will be six grandsons--Frank Nacke, Vernon Nacke, Derald Pick, Wendell Roling, Fred Tentinger and James Pick.

Besides the sorrowing widow, survivors include six daughters and three sons: Mrs. Frank (Theresa) Nacke, Mrs. Tony (Regina) Pick, Frank Roling, Mrs. Henrietta Tentinger, Mrs. Paul (Rosella) Rodesch, Mrs. Albert (Elenor) Siefke, Mrs. Ernest (Martha) Groepper, Lawrence Roling and Gilbert Roling. All live in the Remsen community with the exception of Mrs. Tentinger, who lives at Marcus.

Preceding Mr. Roling in death were a son and daughter who died in infancy.

A surviving brother is Anton Roling of New Vienna and a sister is Mrs. Ann Sabers of Dyersville, Iowa.
