Joseph Anton Weis was born in 1864. He is found listed on the 1880 Federal Dependent Delinquent and Defective census Schedule.
According to that record, he got meningitis at the age of two and became a deaf-mute as a result. It stated that by 1880 Joseph had been institutionalized for several years at St. Francis in Milwaukee, and that he was not capable of working. Family lore agrees that he was a deaf-mute, but also that he was a harness maker by occupation. Joseph evidently stayed in Dyersville while others of the family moved to Cherokee County. He died in 1892 and is buried in St Francis Cemetery.
