David & Sophia (Jenkins) Nichols

DAVID NICHOLS, farmer, Sec.36 ; P.O.Farley; born Oct. 5, 1811, in Duchess Co., N.Y.; he came to Dubuque Co. in 1852,and has since resided here; he owns 200 acres of land. He married Sophia Jenkins in 1837; she was born in Columbia Co., N.Y.; they have four children, two living- Mary J. (now Mrs. Watts) and Arthur H. who served in the late war). Democrat.

Mr. David Nichols came with his wife Sophia to this area in 1852. David was born October 5, 1811 in D. County, New York. Mrs. Nichols was born July 6, 1819 in Columbia County, New York
The Nichols married in 1837. They had three children: Mary J. (Mrs. Watts), Arthur H. and N. H.

David Nichols settled in Section 8, Iowa Township building a log house and clearing land for farming. He later farmed in Section 36, New Wine Township. Mr. Nichols was a Methodist. Sophia recalled in an interview in early childhood of attending the first Methodist services in the house of Mr. Isaac Simpson. She passed away May 14, 1907 in Oregon. Sophia’s body was brought back to Fairview Cemetery for burial. She passed away May 14, 1907 in Oregon. Sophia’s body was brought back to Fairview Cemetery for burial.

David Nichols died Jan. 21, 1899 and is buried next to his wife.
