Mary Hohmbraker

Sperry - Mary Louise Hohmbraker, 96, of Sperry, died at 5:32 PM Friday, December 25, 2020, at the Prairie Ridge Care & Rehabilitation in Mediapolis.

Born May 12, 1924, in Mount Pleasant, IA, she was the daughter of John and Viola Marie Young Vollmer. On May 27, 1954, she married Warren Hohmbraker at the Lutheran Church in Mediapolis.

Two weeks after graduating from high school she entered Iowa Wesleyan College. She finished the work required for a teaching certificate in one year and two summers in a program that normally took two years. Mary's first teaching job was at Sperry in the third and fourth grades. In the years that followed it was night school and summer school until she received a BA degree. In the meantime she taught at New London, Argyle, Mediapolis and Sperry. She retired after 42 years in teaching in Southeast Iowa.

She went to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis, as well as taught Sunday School and later attended Kingston Methodist Church. She was a member of the Mississippi Valley Morgan Horse Club, Hawkeye Morgan Horse Club, and Louisa County Saddle Club along with her husband. She liked gardening and feeding the chickens, cats, and dogs. She was a hardworking farmers wife. She kept a journal of her daily activities, and would always have a table full of food on the table for guests and farmhands. She always made sure everyone was prepared for trips and had everything they would need. She enjoyed sewing and baking and made the best chocolate chip and sugar cookies around. She liked to visit with family and friends and host at her home, where she always made sure you where fed and had something to drink. Most of all, she adored her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughters.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Marvalene (Randy) Cousins of Burlington; two grandchildren, Heather (Jeremy) Wick of Mediapolis, and Shayla Cousins of Eddyville, IA; two great-granddaughters, Hailey & Adalynn; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Martha Heaton, and one infant sister.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM , Thursday, December 31, 2020 at the Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mrs. Hohmbraker will be 11:00 AM Thursday, December 31, 2020, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Linda Smith officiating. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

Due to the concerns regarding COVID-19, attendees will be required to wear masks and practice social distancing.
