Harry Wayne Schultz

H. Wayne Schultz passed away peacefully at his home in Corvallis on April 13 with his family at his side.

Wayne was born in Burlington, Iowa, on June 13, 1930, to Meta Laue and Harry Schultz. He was the eldest of four children. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1948 and received a degree in pharmacy from the State University of Iowa in 1952.

After a year in graduate school, he was drafted into the service. On the train ride from boot camp to Fort Lewis, Wash., Wayne caught sight of Edna McCall and told his army buddy, "I'm going to marry that woman!" True to his word, he did, and they enjoyed nearly 53 years of wonderful marriage. He never tired of telling the story of their introduction.

After his discharge from the army, Wayne returned to SUI, where he received a doctorate in pharmaceutical chemistry. In 1959, Wayne and his young family moved to Corvallis. He began his academic career at the college of pharmacy at Oregon State University, where he taught for 32 years. His teaching days often included a lunch hour game of basketball with the students and staff. Family vacations were spent traveling, fishing, camping and hiking. After retiring, Wayne pursued a wide range of personal interests including international travel, photography, relaxing with Edna at their cabin on the Puget Sound, earning a master's in business administration from OSU and spending time with his grandchildren.

A devoted husband and father, Wayne had a sly sense of humor and a passion for knowledge. He instilled in his three girls a taste for adventure, the desire for lifelong learning, a strong sense of integrity and the importance of family.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Edna; daughters Linda Sekermestrovich, Karen Rasmussen Lee, and Meg Aulerich; sons-in-law Pete Sekermestrovich, Ron Lee and Steve Aulerich; six grandchildren; brother Robert Schultz of Burlington, Iowa; sisters Lois Nelson and Mary Ludlow of Algoma, Wis.

A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Grace Lutheran Church.
