James Cogswell, 58, janitor, at the Burlington Basket company, died yesterday morning in St. Francis hospital where he was taken about 2 o'clock Sunday morning after he had fallen into the firebox of the stoker at the basket factory.
His entire body was severely burned and had not the night watchman, H. W. Danielson, heard him fall abd pull him from the flames his body would doubtless have been cremated and the cause of his disappearance unknown. Mr. Cogswell had started to walk over a space above the firebox of the furnace to inspect a water gauge when the accident occurred. It is believed that he either tripped and fell on the covering of sheet iron which was being used, pending the completion and delivery of heavier permanent covers.
A physician was called and the injured man taken to the hospital where he died, yesterday morning. Although his injuries were so severe that no hope for his recovery was entertained he lived for more than 24 hours after the accident. He was conscious for several hours.
Mr. Cogswell, whose home was at 906 South Street, was born in Wapello, Sept. 20, 1871, and came to Burlington from Kossuth 40 years ago. He was married to Elizabeth Judd, Nov. 1907. Mrs. Cogswell preceded him in death in 1928.
He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna Terry of Webster City; two brothers, R.H. Cogswell of Burlington and J.E. Cogswell of Hemmett, Cal. and a foster son, Floyd Cogswell of Eldora, Ia.
The body was taken to the Burnett-Wallen funeral home, pending funeral arrangements.
