Obit from unknown newspaper----
John Mehaffy was born in County Monoghan, Ireland, nearly eighty years ago. His exact age is not known. He united with the Reformed Presbyterian church at an early age and was a life-long member. His first marriage was to Miss Elizabeth Winslow. To this union was born five sons and four daughters. David, of Mediapolis; John W., of Garland; Joseph of near Mediapolis; Samuel, of near Mediapolis; William, of near Garland; Mrs. Hannah Brown, who lives southeast of Mediapolis; Mrs. Elizabeth Edgar, deceased; Mrs. Mattie Caldwell, near Mediapolis, and Miss Lena in the home. There are also forty-five grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren. Mr. Mehaffy, with his wife and family emigrated to the United States in 1872 and came directly to the Sharon neighborhood, where he lived continously since that time. He was at one time a member of the Old Kossuth congregation and at another time of Linn Grove; also a member of the Morning Sun congregation.
Twelve years after the death of his first wife, Mr. Mehaffy was united in marriage with Mrs. Elizabeth Mehaffy, who survives to mourn his departure. His death occurred on the thirty-first anniversary of this latter marriage. The family moved from the farm on the 13th of last November. Mr. Mehaffy has been in a very weakened physical condition for the last two years. His last illness was of about ten days duration. He passed away very quietly a few minutes after midnight Thursday morning, March 6, 1919. His faith was in his Savior and in this blessed hope he passed on into the great future and we are persuaded that his soul is resting happily in the Heavenly home. "Blessed are the dead that died in the Lord." The funeral services were held on Saturday, with a short service at the house at 11 o'clock and more extended services at Sharon church at 1:30 p.m., conducted by his pastor, Rev. E.L. McKnight. Mr. Mehaffy was well-known and respected in this community and will be greatly missed by a circle of friends.
