WM. GILLEARD PASSED AWAY

Well Known New London Resident Died Sunday at Iowa City.

New London (IA), February 8. -- William Laird Gilleard was born September 24, 1890, at Yarmouth. Iowa, and passed away Sunday morning at 6:25, at the University hospital at Iowa City. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Gilleard, Sr. On September 24, 1913, he was married to Miss Mary Elkins, who passed away April 27, 1922.

He is survived by three children. Nadean and Burdell at home, and Robert, who lives with his uncle and aunt at Loveland, Colorado, two brothers and four sisters, Mrs. Melvin Hall and Joe Gilleard of Mt. Union; Mrs. C. A. Baxter of Burlington; Mrs. Basil Poggemiller (sic) of Salem; George Gilleard and Mrs. Nathan Campbell of Yarmouth and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Elkins, who has lived at the Gilleard home and helped him in caring for the children since the death of his wife. Three sisters, one brother, his father and mother, also preceded him In death.

Mr. Gilleard came to New London about twenty-one years ago and has resided here ever since. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. and M. W. of A. lodges of New London and the Eagles lodge of Burlington.

He had been ailing for many months and about Christmas time had his tonsils removed. Before he could recover from the shock of this operation he suffered a severe attack of gall stones and was taken to the hospital at Iowa City two weeks ago, whore, on Wednesday of last week he underwent a second operation from which he failed to rally.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Methodist Protestant church, the Reverend B. H. Finch, officiating. Music was furnished by the town male quartet: George Elliott. Herbert Strack, Ralph Eckey and John Van Osdol, with burial in Trinity cemetery.
