The Burlington Hawk-Eye

Yarmouth (IA), December 23. -- William Gilleard was born in Garthrop near Cool, in Yorkshire, England, May 6, 1853, and died at Yarmouth, Iowa, December 21, 1914, aged 61 years, 7 months and 15 days. He came to America in 1883 spending a year and three months in Detroit, Michigan. Following this he came to Yarmouth. He had learned the blacksmith trade in England and he opened a shop in Yarmouth. His family was yet in England, but in three months he had provided a home for them and sent for them. He resided in Yarmouth continuously from that time until his death. He was a great lover of home and family, and on the night before his death had sat around the fireside in apparently as good health as ever, reading the church papers. He retired at the usual hour and about three o'clock his wife noticed that something was wrong and called the children, who were at home, to the bedside.

In a few minutes he passed away without speaking. He was a familiar figure about the village for many years and being of a cheerful disposition with a kindly word for all. he will be really missed. He had a host of friends who sympathize with the family.

He leaves to mourn his loss a wife and eight children: Mrs. Henry Welch, of Yarmouth; Mrs. Melvin Hall, of Mt. Union; Joe, of Yarmouth; Mrs. Cortes Baxter, of Shreveport, Louisiana; Mrs. Basil Poggemlller (sic), of New London: George and Hazel, of Yarmouth. Mr. Fred Gilleard, Mrs. Walter Ekey (sic), and a babe preceded him in death. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and the funeral was held from that church Wednesday noon, conducted by Reverend C. Cray Jones. Interment was in the Trinity cemetery.
