Marvin Chester Meeker, 87, of Burlington, died at 11:10 PM Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at his home in rural Burlington from complications of Leukemia.

Born January 31, 1928, in Pekin, IL, he was the son of Daniel Rodney and Hazel Williams Meeker. On April 5, 1953, he married Dolores Blanche Spanhut in Burlington.

Marvin farmed with his dad, brother, and nephew, Mark Meeker, on the Meeker Family Farms, starting at age seven.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War from 1950 until 1952.

He was a member Kingston United Methodist Church where he gave some sermons and taught men's Sunday School class. He was very innovative, even modifying his own farm equipment to improve the design. He helped with the Mississippi River flood on the levee by his property, walking and taking equipment there. He was always ready and willing to help when needed. He played basketball and baseball and ran track in high school. He enjoyed John Wayne movies and Zane Grey books. He was an avid farmer and bowler, scoring a 300 point game.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores; three daughters, Joyce Ann (David) Acheson of Ankeny, Rhonda Kaye (Bruce) Jensen of Richmond, TX, and Diane Marie (Ricardo) Bimbela of Santa Barbara, CA; five grandchildren, Daniel (Anna) Acheson, Aaron (Melissa) Acheson, Rachel (Jacob) Kellogg, Shondalea Jensen, and Eric (Cheyenne) Jensen; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Ronald Meeker, and one brother, Crafton Meeker.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM Sunday, February 8, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Meeker will be 10:00 AM Monday, February 9, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Earlene Lekwa and Beth Briggs officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will be in Kossuth Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Kingston United Methodist Church following the burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Great River Hospice, Mediapolis Fire and Ambulance, and Kingston United Methodist Church.
