Geneva Eleanor Mester Downer Newman, 88, of Burlington, died at 11:43 a.m. Tuesday, February 17, 2004, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born April 12, 1915, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Frederick and Susie Johnson Mester. In 1933, she married Maxwell D. Downer Sr. in Hannibal, Illinois. They Divorced in 1956. In 1957 she married Harley Newman in Burlington. He died in 1983.
Geneva worked many years at Leopold here in Burlington, and while living in Lewisville, Texas, worked at Grandies. She was a homemaker and loved to crochet, sew and bake. She moved back to Burlington after her stroke in 1996 and lived with her son, Maxwell, for five years before taking residence at Burlington Care Center for the last four years.
Survivors include two sons, Maxwell D. Downer Jr. of Burlington and Donald L. Downer of Sperry; two step-sons, Ted Newman of Lewisville, Texas and Bob Newman, Indianapolis, Indiana; one stepgranddaughter, Linda Newman of Allen Texas; one granddaughter, Melody Berenger of Sperry; four grandsons, Kevin Downer of Sperry, Doug Downer of Davenport, Daryl Downer of Burlington and Robert Brissey of Burlington; four nieces, Charlotte Johnson of Farmington, Bonnie Wagner of Apache Junction Arizona, Loretta Robertson of Danville and Lois Gosnell of Orleans, Vermont; two nephews, William Schmitz Jr. of Montrose and Larry Schmitz of Barnet, Missouri. She also has several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Geneva was preceded in death by both husbands, her parents, grandparents, three sisters and one niece, Darlene Manshiem.
Geneva will be cremated, as per her wishes, there will be no services or visitation.
