Mrs. Betty Ruth Lewis Thomas, 89, of Grinnell and formerly New London, died Sunday, December 28, 2014 in Grinnell.

She was born September 13, 1925 in Stephenville, Texas to Owen L. and Eva Norma Griffin Lewis. She was a 1943 graduate of San Benito High School and a 1947 graduate of Memorial Baptist Hospital of Nursing in Houston, Texas. On March 22, 1947 she married Donald L. Thomas in San Benito. He preceded her in death on August 5, 1991.

Mrs. Thomas was a nurse at the Memorial Hospital and later Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant for 34 years, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the New London Presbyterian Church, Henry County Nurses Association, Cadet Nurse Corp and enjoyed gardening and houseplants, and her dogs.

She is survived by one son, Anthony Don Thomas of Lisbon; one daughter Vanessa Lynn (Eric) Shinkle of Lynnville, Iowa; 9 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one sister Beth Mohr of Andrews, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sons, Nicholas Jon Thomas and Michael Owen Thomas in infancy.

Graveside inurnment will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, rural New London. Pastor Aimee Goldmeyer will officiate. A memorial has been established for the Poweshiek County Humane Society.
