Phoebe Elizabeth Hippe, 96, of Mediapolis, died at 1 p.m. Sunday January 25, 2004, at Prairie Ridge Care Center in Mediapolis.

Born September 7, 1907, in Kewanee, Illinois, she was the daughter of John and Josephine Larson Fredeen. On August 20, 1927, she married Theodore Alan Gilchrist in Burlington. He preceded her in death. On March 6, 1953, she married Harry Hippe in Burlington. He died April 29, 1978.

Mrs. Hippe was a homemaker. She also was a part-time bookkeeper and helped her father on the mail route.

She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. She was an excellent seamstress, making winter coats from discarded adult coats. She crocheted beautiful butterflies for handkerchief corners, crosses for bookmarks, hot pads and pilow case edges. She enjoyed cooking, baking, reading,crossword puzzles and automobile rides.

Survivors include one son, John Gilchrist of Mitchell, S.D.; one daughter, Joyce Burris of LaMirada, California; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, one granddaughter, one brother, two sisters, four half sisters and two half brothers.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of service Thursday in Prugh's Chapel.

The funeral for Mrs. Hippe will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Prugh's Chapel, with the Rev. Carl Engstrom officiating. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Bethany Lutheran Church.
