Mr. Karl Heinrich Benninghoven, 84, of Burlington died peacefully at 6:35 a.m. Sunday, September 14, 2014, at Prairie Ridge Care Center in Mediapolis.
Born December 22, 1929 in Wuppertal-Ronsdorf, Germany, he was the son of Werner Gottfried and Elizabeth Anna (Widmayer) Benninghoven. On April 29, 1950 he married Maria Magdalene "Marlene" Vestweber in Affoldern, Germany.
Mr. Benninghoven attended high school and college in Germany. He was a carpenter for Carl A. Nelson Co. for 20 years, then in 1984 became a self-employed carpenter, retiring in 1992.
Mr. Benninghoven was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church since 1954 and enjoyed singing, and working with wood. He also was an avid reader.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Marlene Benninghoven of Burlington; one daughter, Karen E. McCabe of Cedar Rapids; one son, Wolfgang (Karla McCall) Benninghoven of Solon; three grandchildren, Marina Benninghoven of Denver, Colorado, Alex (Brittany) Benninghoven of Palo and Jennifer (Dan) Kaiser of Cedar Rapids; three great granddaughters, Maria, Ella and Evelyn; one great grandson, Liam; two step great grandchildren, Lauren and Issac; one brother, Claus (Lore) Benninghoven of Burlington; and six nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call from noon until 7 p.m. Thursday, September 18th, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m.
The memorial funeral service for Mr. Benninghoven will be 11 a.m. Friday, September 19th, at Bethany Lutheran Church with the Rev. Rick Biedermann officiating. Inurnment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery following the luncheon at the church.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Bethany Lutheran Church.
Cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.
