Mr. Howard Everett Taeger, 78, of rural West Burlington died at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday, September 9, 2014, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born November 8, 1935 in rural West Burlington, he was the son of Herbert A. and Stella M. (Watson) Taeger. On May 23, 1954 he married Patricia A. Timmerman at Bethany Lutheran Church.
Mr. Taeger was a 1953 graduate of Burlington High School. He started his career after high school by working at Burlington Northern as an electrician for eight years. At age 25 he went on to work at the Iowa Ordnance Plant as an inspector and continued as a fireman and a crew chief for 36 years, retiring in 1996. He also served as a volunteer fireman for the West Burlington Volunteer Fire Department. On his days off from working at the Plant, he worked for the City of West Burlington and repaired televisions. In his later years he was employed by Danville Telephone Company installing satellite dishes. He was also the owner of Howard Taeger Electric. In addition, Mr. Taeger loved farming and farmed his family farm and raised livestock.
Mr. Taeger loved and lived for his family. He was a lifelong member of Peace Lutheran Church of West Burlington where he taught Sunday school for 13 years, served on the Church Council many times and was president three times with his last position being financial secretary. He was the general contractor for the planning and building of the community room at Peace Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Patricia A. Taeger of West Burlington; one daughter, Nancy (John) Schuff of West Burlington; one son, Jeffrey (Joyce) Taeger of West Burlington; five grandchildren, Joshua (Hollie) Schuff, Sarah (Matthew) Granquist, Ann (Mathew) Wilson, Lucas (Amber) Taeger, and Andrew (Liberty) Taeger; eight great grandchildren, Kale, Kennedy, Finnely, Greyson, Ava, Colt, Kora, and Jack; and one brother, George E. Taeger of West Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call from noon until 8 p.m. Friday, September 12th, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m.
The funeral service for Mr. Taeger will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 13th, at Peace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kathleen Wohlers officiating. Interment will be in Prairie Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for Peace Lutheran Church.
