Mr. Sounthone Phommivong, 76, of Burlington died at 1:30 p.m. Sunday November 30, 2014, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Born January 10, 1938 in Vientiane, Laos, he was the son of Somphan and Keo (Chantalungsy) Phommivong.
Mr. Phommivong was a police officer in Laos for 15 years and was one of the few selected men to guard the royal family. He obtained the highest security in Laos. The Phommivong family was in a refugee camp before fleeing to America during the Vietnam War in Laos. After arriving in America, he worked in production at Lamont, retiring in 2003. Mr. Phommivong was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was raised in and followed Buddhism. He was elected a monk, studied in Laos under the highest priest and achieved the status of Master of Buddhism.
Survivors include his wife, Udom Phommivong of Burlington; three sons, Ouht (Vy) Phommivong of Davenport, Laphouan Phommivong of Burlington and John Paul Phommivong of Iowa City; two daughters, Thongleuong (Roman) Hossain of Burlington and Keo (Doug) Sadler stationed in Japan; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Moon Phommivong of Portland, Oregon, Loune Phommivong of Lyon, France and Lan Phommivong of Vientiane, Laos; two sisters, Taneone Souvanh of Kansas City, Kansas and Vann Phommivong of Udon Thani, Thailand and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The funeral service for Mr. Phommivong will be 2 - 4 p.m. Friday, December 5th, at Lunning Chapel with Mr. Bountham Khamphilanouvong officiating. Inurnment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.
Cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel and will be accorded following the funeral service.
