Florabelle "Flo" Fickel, 91, of Burlington, died at 9:05 PM Friday, July 25, 2014, at the Blair House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

Born January 1, 1923, in Lee County, IA, she was the daughter of Louis and Clesta Derr Westermeyer. On May 3, 1942, she married John Fickel in Donnellson. He preceded her in death on April 16, 2003.

Flo worked for Sheaffer Pen Co. during war and was a homemaker, raising their two children.

She was a 1940 graduate of Argyle High School.

She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and a member of Great River Friends. She was an avid golfer, scoring three hole-in-ones in her lifetime. She also loved playing bridge, poker, and rummy, knitting caps for newborns, bowling, and mushroom hunting. She enjoyed watching Iowa Hawkeye sports, St. Louis Cardinal baseball games, and horse races. She especially loved spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include one son, Steven (Mary) Fickel and one daughter, Karon (Jeff) Swingle both of Burlington; four grandchildren Bryan Markland of Eugene, OR, Steven (Michelle) Fickel of Burlington, David (Annie) Fickel of Newport, RI, Shauna (Luke) McGinity of Burlington, and Tim Swingle of Lomax, IL; nine great-grandchildren; three godchildren, Wesley Kelley of Pryor, OK, Kirk Westermeyer of Keokuk, and Kathy Hageman of rural Lee county; one brother, Melvin D. Westermeyer of Keokuk; one sister, Audrey J. Klein of Burlington; one brother-in-law, Edward Dettmer of rural Lee county; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and five brothers.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday, July 28, 2014 at Thielen Funeral Home. Food and refreshments will be available during the family visitation.

A private graveside service for Mrs. Fickel will be at a later date at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery with Pastor Bryce Hughes officiating.

Memorials have been established for Zion United Church of Christ, Burlington Area Homeless Shelter, and Great River Hospice.
