BURLINGTON HAWKEYE, MARCH 27, 1901

ACCIDENTALLY SHOT

OFFICER PETER ABRISZ MAY DIE AS A RESULT

Officer Peter Abrisz is lying at St. Francis hospital in an unconscious condition, the result of an accidentally inflicted bullet wound from which he may not recover.
As Abrisz was retiring at his home, No. 1425 South 15th street, shortly before noon to-day, he placed his loaded revolver on a shelf above the bed. In some unexplainable manner the weapon dropped from where it had been placed and the hammer, striking the sewing machine, discharged, the bullet striking the reclining officer in the abdomen. Drs. Hummel, Zaiser and Holiday were hastily summoned and the policeman was removed to St. Francis hospital in an unconscious condition. The bullet has not been recovered, and from the nature of the wound, Abrisz' chances of recovery are very slight. His wife and children are almost frantic with grief over the sad accident.
Dr. Zaiser said this afternoon: "The bullet entered the left groin and ploughed backward and upward, lodging just beneath the skin at the back. If the bullet had passed through the bowels his condition is precarious. The man was unconscious when I left him. His condition is serious."
